The Repair Process

I ended up putting 3 layers of carbon on the inside, the last one 300 mm wide over the entire hull. Agonized over a strongback 1 meter long, but decided it would be largely ineffective over that distance.

That is a mask on my head, should be on my face eh.

Hahaaa ... how real do these look and their .50 caliber too.
Just about all finished.
Only a bungy carry pad to go.

Well that concludes the repair process, all that needs to happen now is to put the canoe under load and see how she holds up. Also it will be interesting to weigh the canoe and see how much weight she put on, I'm guessing about 750 grams or 1.5 Ib max. The weight of the canoe before the "mishap" was 10.20kg or 22.5 Ib.
I hope this has been entertaining and of use to someone, i have enjoyed doing it, but i now understand why the majority of Canoe Manufacturers dislike doing repair work on hi - tech OC1's, it's very time consuming. ........................... now if i can just defend my SMM's National Marathon title at Coff's Harbour on Thursday, it will be all the more worthwhile.
Wish me luck. ... cheers Rambo.
PS. i will post the weight here tomorrow.
UPDATE on weight
Unbelievable, the canoe ended up gaining only 300 grams (10.50 oz). Probably because i rubbed most of the original hull paint off.
Have just paddled the Hurricane to 2nd place in the SMM National Titles Marathon at Coff's Harbour in smallish conditions. The canoe feels no different, but on my first warm up i left the rear bung undone and took on 5 litres of water and thought i may have had a leak somewhere, allthough i had pressure tested it when i finished it, sure gave me a fright.
Cheers Rambo

Have you pre fitted a slot in there to receive a hydrofoil Rambo?
Lats
.. Fin boxes are perfect for that, but i'm waiting for the auto lowering mechanism first, so i can get up to speed and then throw a lever and lower the Hydrofoil gradually. Hahhaaa.
Hey Rambo,
Nice job so far, you must have done this before , or got some good advise.....Was there much overspray on your house windows!!!!!
Rowdy
No, but i can't see out of the windscreen of the Commodore Ute.
Rambo
Are you gonna pull the trigger on a full cammo paint job ???????
I'll give you a hint, you know those bullet hole stickers hoons put on their cars .... ??? Yep .50 caliber.
Haahaa ...Rambo
Aloha Rambo,
Enjoyed your posts on repairing your Hurricane. Came out nice. 2 questions: How did you repair the hole you cut out to do the repairs?, any pics. And where did you get those stickers of the fake holes in your boat?
Mahalo,
Blane
Hi Blane, glad you enjoyed the repair sequence. The hole was under the bungee mat so the exterior finish was not important. All I did was make some carbon epoxy strips on a piece of plastic, wait till they were stiff and glued them as flanges on the inside if the hull. Then place the cut out piece of hull over the flanges and then epoxy over with carbon fabric. The new bungee mat covered the repair so no detailed finishing was required here.
The stickers are available from automotive part stores. …you know, where the “hoons” shop for their hot up gear for their cars.
Cheers Rambo
Hi Rambo
What 2 part paint did you use? Surface prep? Primer?
Tom Thring
Cape Town, South Africa
Hi Tom, as the Hurricane's original factory paint was 2 pak not gelcoat, the only surface prep was 380 grit wet and dry then 2 pak primer and 2 pak top coat with a 380 sand after the primer coat. Any general purpose 2 pak will do the job. Just ask for user instruction sheets when you buy the paint and follow guide. Prime and topcoat over gelcoat is fine, as long as it is not water logged or in very poor cracked condition.

Hi there,
This same repair process would work on an outrigger connection boat right? Just making sure. Our 2 man has snapped and were researching the materials, etc.
thanks.
Sure, just check whether the finish is gelcoat or paint and what the layup fabrics were. Some Outrigger Connection OC2's were carbon/kelar weave, just try and match what was original if you can. Good luck.
Cheers Rambo
