This is a little TimeLapse i did on the Std Model GoPro Wide, NOT the HD model which is not available yet. That is actually my backyard.
Amazing what you can get out of these little cams. I'm doing a few Beach/Outrigger TimeLapses over the next few days, post here when there done.

If you're a follower of my blog you would know my POV or on-canoe mounted cameras are GoPro Cameras and that they do a fantastic job in their role as a Fully Waterproof camera. Well guess what? .... I'm really excited to announce that GoPro are releasing a High Definition model with improve features ... the full story below.
The GoPro HD still has the killer 170 degree wide angle lens and will have three recording resolutions: 1080p (1980 x 1080), 960p (1280×960, so it’s similar to 720p but at 4:3 ratio), and 720p (1280 x 720). What’s even better is the camera can record 720p at double speed 60 FPS for buttery smooth high-def slow motion deliciousness. Here are the full video specs with bitrates, please note bitrates may change in final production version:
* 1080P 1980×1080 30 fps @12 Mbps
* 960P 1280×960, 30 fps @ 10 Mbps
* 720P 1280×720, 30 fps @ 7.5 Mbps
* 720P 1280×720, 60 fps @ 15 Mbps
The GoPro HD has a completely redesigned power system. The new power design includes a 1100 maH Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery pack. This provides greatly improved battery life over the original GoPro Wide series, especially in cold weather and cold water environments. This new battery pack should provide 2-3 hours of record time, and you can always pack extra batteries as well.
The camera will accept up to a 32gb SDHC card, which is good knowing the massive file sizes that 1080p video will produce. The video compression format is H.264, a great universal format for HD video.
In addition we’ve heard rumors of a wireless remote. There will also be an LCD "backpack" that you can clip on to the back of the camera and a battery attachment for increased recording time.
Exciting stuff, the only downside is longer editing time with the HD footage but will be worth it and will integrate perfectly into the Hi Def footage i shoot with my JetSki Rig. The 1280 x 720p 60frames per second is what excites me.
Price is being touted as US$299.
Should have a unit for testing soon.
This puts GoPro so far ahead of their competition as the most affordable, FULLY WATERPROOF High Def Camera on the market period.

Permanently Preventing Fogging of the GoPro Lens

I'm currently testing a few permanent solutions to fogging internally of the "Wide Angle" GoPro Lens. Nothing peeves me more than excitedly loading the days footage into the PC, only to find 40mins of it is engulfed in fog and useless, especially as i know there were some hooten' runs on it.
Here is what I'm testing and why it will work.
Protective Vents provide continuous airflow in sealed housings without allowing contaminants to enter because of the proprietary expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane in the vent. This unique ePTFE membrane has a low surface tension, so it repels liquids, such as water, oil, and surfactants, as well as preventing dust, dirt, and other environmental contaminants from entering the housing.
You will need to drill a small hole in the case (about 3mm, i will be able to give you the tested location) and glue or press fit one of these little vents in the picture below. The alternative is to drill the same hole size and glue a stick on piece of the vent fabric over the hole. I like the first option better as it's permanent but just have to be sure there is no interference with the cam in the case.

These are the GoPro Wide Camera angles I've selected for the Karel Jr shoot in Perth World Cup in Western Australia on the 17th Jan 2009. I will also be shooting Hi Def from a Jet Ski.

This is from the DVD of the race that i shot entirely with unmanned Gopro cameras with delay timers. The footage follows the race of 3 of the top crews …. NorthCliffe Open (the eventual winner) ……… Outrigger Australia Open (2nd) ………….. and Mooloolaba Masters (1st Masters, 5th overall) who i paddled with.
Many changeovers are featured and techniques of the great steerers.
You will probably recognise some of the names like Danny Sheard, Pete Dorries, Travis Grant, Mike Mills -Thom etc. who have all competed and won either open or masters at the Molo Hoe.
A larger and better quality version will be upload later, this one up now is 20 mins long and a 60mb download. The video is highly compressed to limit download size. The original is HQ.

I was to fit a "GoPro Wide Angle" to a new Aussie Tahitian Va'a at a race on the weekend, but Travis Grant paddled his Hurricane instead, too rough for a Va'a, + it has no bulkheads yet, so it fills up with water. Had the wide angle level with the rear Iako on his Hurricane directly behind him. That is less than a meter away from his back and you could swear it was mounted at the rudder, it's that wide. He and Danny Sheard had a humdinger downwind battle, neither getting away from the other till the very end. Danny was in the picture the whole time. Only problem, with the huge lens, sunlight caused the inside to fog up after 15 mins on both Cams, so need additional anti fogging, plus it was extremely humid that day. No shit, these are the way to go if i can sort out a few little problems.
The Hamo Cup 42km DVD will Premier at Vaka Eiva on the big screen at "Jacks" ( if Victoria will let me) it's frigging awesome, be a classic.
Heaps to do before i fly out fly out Thurs to fulfill my commitment to film Vaka Eiva, including finishing the underwater housing for the new 1080i Hi Def Cam, this thing will blow your mind, the pics are stunning on my HD TV, as good as the HD channel on TV, now i'm broke again. :cry:
I will put the footage of Travis up when i return from Vaka Eiva. Also I have a new filming Gig in Western Australia shooting Multiple OC1 World Champion Karel Tresnak Jnr in Dean Gardiner's Perth World Cup. Karel has given me permission the put Go Pros on his Zephyr OC1 and i will be filming him from my own (Colin Bartley's - Outrigger Connection Aussie Distributor) media boat in Hi Def, this will be very interesting footage.
Heaps of other stuff happening more later ...........

I've been a busy boy these last couple of weeks modifying and customizing a batch of GoPro Cameras incorporation wireless remote control and 2 types of delay timers in preparation for filming the Hamilton Island Cup. As i will also be paddling in all the events, i need to be able to have most of the Canoe Mounted Cams turn on and record at different parts of the course automatically, except the radio control type which will be controlled from the support boat.
This is what i have so far.
Have now finished and on water tested all three modified versions.
The first picture is obviously the remote control version. The transmitter has a range of 1km LOS and the four buttons have the following functions.
A - Powers Up/Down the GoPro and steps through menu.
B - Record On/Off and sets menu choices.
The second picture is the delay timers Type 1 and 2.
Type 1 will turn on the GoPro and activate record 5 seconds later.
Type 2 will turn on record only but it has AA Batteries in the box instead of AAA so will last 5 hours plus.
Both can be delay set from 1 min and up to 5 hours.
All totally waterproof and can take some rugged treatment.
There are 6 R/C type and 3 each of the delay timer Types.

My latest wireless HQ SuckerCam.
This little baby i made to suction mount onto any flat or curved surface, like an OC6 front or rear deck or as i have just done, behind me on the “Peggie OC1”.
It has 520 line Bullet Cam with 10 hour battery and Digital Recorder in the Pelican box. The picture quality is awesome. I have 2 lens for it, 127 degree wide angle and 90 standard. Weight is around 3LB.
This thing sticks like a leech, and after huliing big time yesterday in big surf, never moved. I do attach a lanyard just in case though.
Watch the video from the SuctionCam mounted only 3 ft behind me.
Would be good for Advertising eh. Anyone want to sponsor me? Hahaaa.
This is what i did to my GoPros. It will the fit on to any 1/4 inch camera tripod or accessory mount, make it more versatile. Just superglue the threaded adapter onto the rear.
Not a big fan of the HelmetCam as it gives jerky footage, but it can be useful.
And RalphCam of CourseI also built a Rotating/Panning motor that will rotate my cams on any mount using a remote control. Watch the video to see it in action.

After an hour of surfing the point at Mooloolaba this morning a big one finally got me. Another broken iako and a rescue by one of our own ..... "Lemmo" and his daughter on a double ski.
Good news is, i had the GoPro video running to capture it all to keep you buggas entertained.
Thanks Lemmo and Mick Smith for driving me and my canoe back to the club house.

The last part of this small video shows a different camera angle, it needs to drop down about 300 mm and tilt up slightly, then i believe we will have the ideal behind paddler position. The quailty is quite good considering the footage is compressed down from 240 meg to 4.25 meg. The original played on a full size TV is perfect.
Just waiting for that big bump day, i know it's coming and i'll be prepared.

Here is the new tripod mount i have made for the Hurricane. It is completely adjustable from 1 - 1.5 metres high, the head rotates 360 degrees and tilts up and down, i can lay it back or lay it over to the ama so it shoots the paddler side on or from the rear or face it rearwards to capture the paddlers behind me. I'm also attaching a mouth operated record on/off switch, so i can control it by biting on it.
The whole thing stays permanently attached to a spare iako and only needs the seat track screw removed to dismantle it.
I have also put a hood on the waterproof housing to shade the lens and this has improved the picture quality out of sight. I can now shoot video at a closer angle to the sun without exposure problems.
I've shot some footage and am impressed, the perspective is perfect. Sound is still a problem as every vibration is transmitted to the mic even though the housing is mounted too 50mm foam.

A short video to test GoPro3 in low light conditions. The camera was mounted on the Iako of my Hurricane just as the sun was setting, i was interested in how this little gem performed in low light conditions. The quality is remarkable considering the video was converted and compressed on my computer and further compressed by the hosting site. The original played on a full size TV is comparable to any average consumer video camera. I'm impressed. All i need now is good OC1 surfing conditions and a subject to point it at.
I can see lots of fun things to do with this baby, standby for some action soon.

I have ordered this little Waterproof Still & Video Camera for trial. It's cheap ... $AU 220 delivered and if the reports from a fellow gadget lover are correct, this is a little beauty and far exceeds it's previous little brother. Here are the specs ....
This will be perfect for using on the OC1/2 or OC6, and apparently it takes excellent underwater video and stills as well. No conversion needed to upload to a computer for editing, just plug in to a USB port and the files are loaded straight to your desktop ready for editing in TV quality resolution.
I'm hoping to receive it before the Nationals so i can give it a good workout and post a review here later in the week.
In the mean time check out the Quality in this 10 sec video shot with the camera, it also records sound.
